Dr. Gene Bierhaus Athletic Scholarship
Dr. Gene Bierhaus was born & raised in the Brainerd area. He graduated from BHS and the University of Minnesota with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the Brainerd Hall of Fame.
Dr. Gene Bierhaus 85, of Lake Shore, died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, October 11, 2006. the Brainerd High School’s Dr. Gene Bierhaus Athletic Scholarship or Confidence Learning Center. Gene led a wonderful, full life throughout his 85 years. He was born March 23, 1921 in Brainerd to Frederick and Loretta (Borders) Bierhaus. Gene grew up in Brainerd and graduated from Brainerd High School in 1939. He was a talented athlete. He was co-captain of the Brainerd High School football team in 1938. His all-state football honors helped Gene earn a scholarship to University of Minnesota where he played football from 1939-1942. He was also the Big Ten light heavyweight boxing champion. Gene received a degree in education before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers, but the Marine Corps called him to a higher duty. During World War II, Gene was a Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. He was on the battlefield at Iwo Jima, and saw the first flag raised at Mt. Suribachi. After convalescing, Gene continued his education in veterinary medicine. Dr. Bierhaus operated the Brentwood Small Animal Hospital in Denver as well as being the veterinarian for the Colorado State Racing Commission. He became one of the preeminent horse racing veterinarians in the United States and was highly honored for his work with thoroughbred racing. Gene worked in Colorado for more than 30 years before returning to the Brainerd area in 1992. Gene also enjoyed his family and they were a significant part of his life. He married Jeanne Broach at the Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia. They were married for 47 years before Jeanne passed away. Gene and Jeanne had two daughters, Kristine and Susan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gene will be missed by his daughters, Kristy Bierhaus, of Denver, CO, Susy (Kurt) Nettleton, of Hopkins; his longtime friend and companion, Janet Boner, of Nisswa; granddaughter, Molly McAdam, of Hopkins; and sister, Rebecca Jones, of Modesto, CA.
