Steven Kuhn Memorial Scholarship
Steven was a music major who participated in band at BHS as a percussionist. Staff Sgt. Steven J. Kuhn, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in San Bernardino, Calif., as a result of an automobile accident when he was only 28 years old. He was born Sept. 6, 1970, in Brainerd to Norman J. and Shirley M. (Rogers) Kuhn. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1989. He enlisted in the Army and attended basic training and AIT in November 1989, where he was trained as a tactical radio/COMSEC repairer. He served in the 112th Signal Battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C. from 1990 to 1995; in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait from 1990-1991; at USA ELM Lansoutheast Izmir, Turkey, from 1995-1997 and with the 669th Maintenance Company at Fort Irwin, Calif., since Oct. 1998. He was Airbourne qualified in 1990. During his army career he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation medal, the Army Commendation medal, the National Defense Service medal, the Southwest Asia Campaign medal, the Humanitarian Service medal, the NCO Professional Development ribbon, the Army Service ribbon, the Army Overseas Service ribbon as well as the Kuwait Liberation medals for service in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He also earned the Canadian Parachute Badge, the German Parachute badge and the Driver’s Mechanical badge with wheel bar. He was a member of American Legion Post #255 and VFW Post #1647.
